Apparently, the Gulf Stream slowed down somewhat significantly during the last Ice Age: http://www.columbia.edu/cu/record/archiv ...

As a side note: the Younger Dryas, which takes place when the earth came from the last ice age took place, is an interesting event climatically seen - if you already have the movie "The Day After Tomorrow" is "very similar times, but somewhat less dramatic In a much longer time. There was an influx of cold freshwater into the Atlantic, will be closed due to high temperatures (drainage of Lake Agassiz), part of the Gulf Stream sends Europe and North America back in Ice Age-like conditions.
